Intertitles

As researched on my trailer analysis it is vital for a trailer to consist of some Intertitles which help the audience understand various elements of the trailer. They would also be used to build and emphasis on tension which anticipates the audience. Below are two Intertitles used within movies as I would be discussing on what effects they have towards the audience.

‘The Dark Knight Rises’

The Dark Knight Rises’ is an anticipated film for most viewers, mostly as it orginates from pervious ‘Dark Knight’ films. When the audience are introduced to this intertitle ‘From Christopher Nolah’ this intertitle would directly attract the audiences in which would be familiar to all Christopher Nolah films as audiences would know what style of genre the movie would be and also how good of a film it would be overall.

‘Men in Black 3’

Although this intertitle is very bold and clear with its large font and clash of black background with white typeface it straight away helps the audience figure out the narrative by telling them the story before previewing after the first half of the trailer. Although this intertitle is very bold and clear with its large font and clash of black background with white typeface it straight away helps the audience figure out the narrative by telling them the story before previewing after the first half of the trailer, this greats anticipation and also the director makes it easier for the audience to understand the narrative.

After looking at a variety of trailers from both horror genres and others I gathered that black and dark backgrounds are always used for Intertitles as this makes the font stand out clear and makes it look effective as it fits in the centre of all left hand thirds. Also the font colours which are used are seen to be of bright colours making the intertitle more appealing and also setting the atmosphere around the audience. Such as a red typeface with a black background would be something in which our group would considering keeping as a Housestyle theme as the colour connotes the horror genre also making the typeface stand out and easier to read.

After much group discussion we decided that our trailer would consist of 10 very brief Intertitles as each would give only a very small idea of the scene away after showing small clips of different scenes as this was ideal to make the audience apprehensive and inquisitive about what happens next. ‘There once was a phenomenon about three girls who didn’t answer the call and this summer history would repeal itself’. This whole long sentence would be split into 5 Intertitles which generated 5 small clips which would help establish the narrative in a positive way. Also by adding the names of the characters makes the audience become more aware of whom they are and if they are established and recognised actors.

- There once was a phenomenon
- About three girls
- Who didn’t answer the call
- And this summer
- History will repeat itself
- Staring…
- Holly Middleton
- Gretchen Luna
- And Faheem Butt
- Will you answer your call?
